Socialist leads Paris mayoral race but leftist rival threatens to split vote

Socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire surged ahead of former culture minister Rachida Dati in the first round of voting for Paris mayor on Sunday as the left bids to extend its 25 years at the helm. But in the capital as in other cities across France, a strong showing by Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Unbowed (LFI) could complicate matters for the mainstream left.
